It’s General Election time!

Laughing man imagesNow could be a good time to raise the issues of older people. We are not a minority group (see previous post).

23,200,000 of us are 50 yrs of age and over, so we could influence the outcome of the election. So let’s challenge the politicians on their policies. Follow us on Twitter for up-to-date information. @hgdover50sforum

How can technology help people with their health and social needs?

My health My techJoin us at our next Forum meeting to find out how technology can be used to ‘help people live well, receive information, support treatment when they need it and make choices about how their care services are provided’. North Yorkshire Health and Wellbeing Board is developing a strategy which will provide a 10 year plan of how technology can be used to help organisations work together to provide an integrated approach to services.

There will also be a presentation by Rachel Durrett (Harrogate and Rural District Clinical Commissioning Group) prior to a Summer engagement event focusing on community mental health services for adults and older people in the Harrogate District.

Further details available on our Forum Events page.

Chair of our Forum resigns from the committee

Ann with Richard WebbAt our AGM on March 28th, Ann Hill (pictured here with Richard Webb) resigned from the Forum Committee. She was one of the founder members of the Harrogate District Over 50s Forum and, for many years, she has represented the Forum at the North Yorkshire Forum for Older People (NYFOP). Ann has ensured that the Forum has provided opportunities for people to meet and discuss issues of importance to older people. Every year, she has planned and co-ordinated bi-monthly day trips to a variety of venues which have proved to be very popular, and which have also helped to generate income for the activities of the Forum. Fortunately, Ann has agreed to continue organising the day trips and information about these is available on our ‘Forum Events’ page.

We would like to thank Ann for all her hard work, which has helped to make the Forum the success it is today.

Important consultation about proposed changes to charges for adult social care.

Care costsAn important consultation has just been opened on proposed changes to the way in which adult social care is charged.

NYCC is consulting on proposals about how people who use adult social care services contribute to their costs. The consultation covers two main areas:

  • the cost of transport to places where people may receive a service; and
  • how the total cost of care is calculated.

Please go to our ‘Have your say‘ page to read about details of the proposed changes and how you can have your say.

Another wonderful day out

Ampleforth AbbeyWe had a wonderful day on the cider (tour) at Ampleforth, yesterday – the weather was just perfect for it.  Warm sunshine, lovely views & autumnal colours. Tea, coffee or apple juice on arrival, an interesting talk in the orchards & so many varieties of apples to try if we wished.  Amazingly the cider presses & bottling area took up little more than a shed the size of two double garages.  Lunch consisted of broccoli & Stilton soup with a huge whole meal granary bread bun, followed by Yorkshire Tapas – ham, beef, pork pie, small sausages, gherkins, leaves, tomatoes & two types of cheese presented on a sharing board – all local produce & as much tea & coffee as required.  Bottles of apple juice, liqueur & apple brandy were available at a discounted price after sampling all of these with lunch.  Then it was on to the main building & Abbey for the rest of the afternoon.

Thanks go to Ann Hill for continuing to provide a wonderful annual programme of days out. Thanks also to Tania Brightmore for her reports on our events.
