Do you know about the Friends and Family Test (FFT)?

NHS England is keen to raise public awareness about the Friends and Family Test. The FFT is a quick and anonymous questionnaire designed to give NHS patients the opportunity to give feedback each time they receive care and/or treatment. Between March 14th – 18th NHS England will launch its awareness campaign, which will feature events, news items and local promotions through advertising, posters and leaflets.

Do you know anyone who is celebrating their 90th Birthday this year?

Queen Elizabeth 2 bTo celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s 90th Birthday the Lord Lieutenant is organising a celebration on Sunday 12 June in Ripon Cathedral. The  Lieutenancy is hoping to invite some very special people who reside within the Lieutenancy area which includes North Yorkshire (A map of the area can be found at: www.nyll.org.uk/about/county-facts )

If your date of birth is either 21 April 1926 or 12 June 1926 (the dates of Her Majesty’s actual & official birthdays), you may apply for a free ticket for yourself and for someone to accompany you.  Anyone with birthdays on these dates will be guaranteed an invitation.    Continue reading

Clean for the Queen

‘Clean for the Queen’ runs from Friday 4 to Sunday 6 March 2016 and aims to give the country a tidy-up ahead of the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations in April. Local residents, schools and community groups who want to organise a clean-up are being encouraged to sign up to the national campaign. Card players laughingCrisp sunny winter mornings can inspire us to think of something new to do. Perhaps you fancy joining a group of people to share an interest and/or find company. Social connections are as important as money and health, according to a major new study. So, how do you find out what is going on in the Harrogate district? Well, of course, you can explore this website! There are links to all sorts of groups, organisations and sources of information. For example, have you ever looked at the Harrogate and Ripon Centres for Voluntary Service (HARCVS) events webpages? Alternatively you could always visit your local library for ideas about recreational and educational events.

Chocolate? Lovely!

untitledMention chocolate and many people would say ‘Yes, please’! So, a grey and rainy day was not going to dampen our enthusiasm as we set out for a visit to the York Chocolate Factory. We toured around the factory hearing the story of York’s chocolate production, discovering the tasting wheel (who knew there were so many different types of chocolate?) and watching the preparation of chocolate goodies.      Continue reading

We certainly got our dancing shoes on!

Pompom3 revOn one of the coldest days of the year, so far, we beat the cold by tripping the light fantastic. What fun we had! Led by Jackie Terry (Dancing for Well-Being), we danced the afternoon away: all types of dancing including the charleston complete with feathers …..!

We also learned about ways to improve health, mobility and balance.

Is it time to exercise the little grey cells?

Adult learningIt’s that time of year, again ….. time to think about learning a new skill, or a new language or just to exercise the ‘little grey cells’. The adult learning prospectuses are now available. Christmas is coming ….. don’t forget St Peter’s Christmas Tree Festival at St Peter’s Church in Harrogate.

Local businesses, shops, local groups, families, and individuals bring decorated Christmas trees to display in the Church.

The Christmas tree festival will be December 12th – 24th and aims to raise essential funding for vulnerable local people.Trees will be on display for two weeks and there will be Remembrance Trees as well as the opportunity to vote for your favourite ones. Anyone can enter the competition.

Aisle viewIf you need inspiration for decorating your Christmas tree or just want to be astounded by others’ imagination, the display in St John’s Church in Knaresborough is not to be missed. Prepare to be amazed by the beautiful, traditional or quirky trees ….. and vote for your favourite. Admission is free,  All donations and proceeds from the festival will be shared between St John’s Church Lighting Fund and its chosen charities.
