New venue for u3a meetings.

Congratulations to u3a on its 30th anniversary – unfortunately festivities were curtailed by the pandemic. Open meetings are starting again on the last Friday of the month at the Wesley Centre. On Friday October 29th the talk will be given by Richard Taylor of the Ripon Civic Society entitled ‘No Rest for the Wicked’. Coffee/tea will be served at 10.30, followed by the talk at 11.15am.

Anyone who is no longer in full-time employment is very welcome to join u3a. Please look at the website : u3asites.org.uk>Harrogate for further details and membership application forms . We need to use our voice to try to make things better for older people, because we are members of a large population. Just look at the figures …..

There are more people in the UK aged 60 and over, than there are under 18*

23,200,000 people, one third of the UK population, are 50 years of age and over.

3,500,000 people in the UK over the age of 65+ live alone

2,000,000 people aged 75+ live alone; of these, 1.5 million are women.

3,000,000 people aged 80 or over are living in the UK

As Emma Thompson (actress) once stated, ‘The trick is to age honestly and gracefully and make it look great, so that everyone looks forward to it’.

New deaf cafe

Every second Thursday of the month, 2 -4pm at Harrogate Library
A chance to meet others and socialise. Everybody is welcome and a special welcome to those who are deaf, hard of hearing or have a dual sensory impairment. A member of NYCC Sensory team will be at each session to offer advice and information.

A new ‘Knit & Natter’ group

This group will be meeting on the last Monday of each month at St Peter’s Church, Cambridge Street, Harrogate for a social ‘Knit & Natter’ gathering knitting/crocheting for various charities in the area. The aim is to meet new people and have some fun whilst producing items for worthwhile causes including: the Homeless; premature baby unit; dementia patients and ‘Knit for Nowt’ – a Yorkshire based charity which provides support for children requiring psychiatric help. Support for older and ex-members of the armed forces

Community First Yorkshire ‘provides a range of services aimed at raising awareness of the issues faced by older and ex-members of the armed forces and enabling them to lead fuller lives. This service covers all of North Yorkshire and is funded by the Aged Veterans Fund at the Ministry of Defence using LIBOR funds.

Community First Yorkshire are committed to contributing to and widening the existing support available for older veterans across the County, working closely with delivery partners and other service charities to carry out this work. They offer person-centred practical, financial, and holistic support – from hardship grants to arts and crafts to befriending. Veterans will have the opportunity to try new things, revisit old interests, or benefit from new and improved connections to their community’. Please follow this link for further information.

An invitation to join the Silver Singers

Silver Singers a singing group for the over 60’s hosted by Catholic Care will meet on Thursday 28 July, 10.15am – 11.30am at St Aelred’s Parish Hall, Woodlands Drive, Harrogate
