Carers UK carries out an annual survey of carers to understand the state of caring in the UK each year. This year a total of 7,397 people shared their experience of what it’s like to be a carer and is the largest State of Caring survey carried out by Carers UK to date. Join the Which? campaign to fix the care system

The Consumer Association (Which?) is campaigning to get the Government to fix the care system, as a matter of priority. Which? estimates that ‘the care home population is already bigger than the City of Manchester and it’s set to grow rapidly over the coming years’.

As increasing numbers of care homes are closing, there are insufficient places for people who need them. Care homes are struggling to provide the care which individuals need. For some residents this can mean that they are not receiving adequate care, or are having to move to another care home when their existing care home closes. Silver Line celebrates its first birthday and embarks on a new venture

The CQC has formed a new partnership with the Silver Line helpline. Silver Line provides a free 24 hour confidential helpline for older people who may live alone. The service offers information, advice and friendship.

By working with Silver Line, the CQC hopes that people will share experiences and comment about their care. The CQC states: ‘Through our ‘tell us about your care’ partnership, anyone can share their concerns – and anonymously if preferred – if they feel they are not being listened to, or might not feel able to speak directly to those responsible for delivering safe, caring, effective, responsive and well-led services that CQC expects’. Are you a Dementia Friend?

Dementia Friends have received increasing publicity recently ….. perhaps you’ve seen the television advertisements. The project was started by the Alzheimer’s Society and is supported by NYCC. The project aims to increase the public’s awareness of dementia and highlights how individuals can help people suffering from dementia to live well. All NHS staff to receive dementia care training

Following Health Education England’s (HEE) publication Making a Difference in Dementia: Nursing Vision and Strategy last year, the Government has now mandated HEE with ensuring that dementia care training programmes are available for all NHS staff within four years.

‘Making a Difference in Dementia: Nursing Vision and Strategy’ supported the Prime Minister’s ‘Dementia Challenge’ and highlighted the nursing contribution to dementia care and described what is expected of all nurses with regard to quality care.The vision demonstrates the 6 ‘C’s (compassion, competence, care, courage, communication and commitment) for dementia care by including nursing values and behaviours.

Health minister Dan Poulter stated “The biggest challenge facing every health and care system in the world is the same. People are living longer and have increasingly complicated health and care needs. We must continue to develop a more mobile and flexible healthcare workforce capable of delivering increasingly sophisticated and personalised care across a variety of care settings.”

It is an informative website providing practical information and advice about choosing care, factors to consider, costs and choices which are available. The website is very attractive and easy to navigate and should prove to be of great help to those having to make difficult decisions about arranging care for someone.

New standard of care for those with dementia

A new standard of care for those with dementia is being launched. The ‘Triangle of Care’ promotes the involvement of the patient, carer and healthcare professionals in providing improved care. The importance of the carer, as the person who knows the patient best, is emphasised.
