Chair of our Forum resigns from the committee

At our AGM on March 28^th, Ann Hill (pictured here with Richard Webb) resigned from the Forum Committee. She was one of the founder members of the Harrogate District Over 50s Forum and, for many years, she has represented the Forum at the North Yorkshire Forum for Older People (NYFOP). Ann has ensured that the Forum has provided opportunities for people to meet and discuss issues of importance to older people. Every year, she has planned and co-ordinated bi-monthly day trips to a variety of venues which have proved to be very popular, and which have also helped to generate income for the activities of the Forum. Fortunately, Ann has agreed to continue organising the day trips and information about these is available on our ‘Forum Events’ page.

We would like to thank Ann for all her hard work, which has helped to make the Forum the success it is today.

Benefits and allowances are the subject of our next Forum meeting on November 26th, details of which can be found on the ‘Forum Events’ page.

It has been reported that two thirds of those eligible do not claim the marriage allowance and grandparents are missing out on boosts to their pensions, if they are looking after grandchildren. Come to our next Forum meeting to get some really good advice about avoiding falls. As people get older, they are arguably more prone to accidents. Slips, trips and falls are the commonest types and are often preventable. Contributing factors include poor mobility and loss of balance. Facilitated by Gail McCracken, NYCC Falls Co-ordinator, this presentation will heighten your awareness of the risks of falls and highlight ways in which you can improve your safety. The meeting will be held in St Paul’s Meeting Room, Victoria Avenue, HG1 1EL ( opposite Harrogate Library) on July 21st 2.00 – 4.00pm. Entrance £2 (includes refreshments and raffle ticket).

What is happening to the NHS?

We had a an eye-opening meeting on Thursday November 26th when we found out what is happening to the NHS and the ways in which its principles have, and are, being undermined by successive governments. Following the showing of the DVD about the NHS -‘The Sell Off’, which exposed some of the covert strategies which suggest that the NHS is being privatised by the back door, there was a lively discussion about how patients could try to rescue the NHS.

‘A guide to exploring the internet safely’

This was a really interesting presentation about the internet. Peter Morris from the University of Oxford started with a brief overview of how he became involved with computers and then went on to demonstrate how the internet enhanced his daily life. Following this, Jordan Booth from Barclays Digital Eagles described their work in helping people to access the internet, together with helpful tips for staying safe on-line. Judging by the number of questions from the audience, this was a popular presentation.

NHS care.data scheme

Members of the the Forum, and visitors, packed the meeting room today to attend a presentation on the Government’s care.data scheme, given by Professor Justin Keen from Leeds University. He described the progress of the scheme to date, its aims, proposed benefits and some of the controversies surrounding it. Forum members were keen to hear about what would be happening to their medical records and this controversial topic certainly stimulated a lot of questions both during and after the presentation. A very informative and worthwhile meeting.
